This scenic farm wedding at River Winds Farm & Estate was the perfect blend of fun, personality, and natural beauty. Erica and Larry prioritized a relaxed atmosphere, incredible food, and a celebration that reflected both of their personalities. From a golden hour photo session by the pond to a custom green suit and an interactive ice cream sundae bar, their wedding day was full of special moments that made it truly their own.
Choosing the Perfect Venue for Their Scenic Farm Wedding
When searching for a venue, Erica and Larry knew they wanted something near Portland, Maine, a place that had been special to them since one of their very first dates. They also wanted a setting where guests could experience the natural beauty of Maine while still being close to the city.
“When we saw River Winds Farm & Estate, it checked all the boxes,” Erica says. “It had a beautiful outdoor space, plenty of room for guests to explore, and just the right mix of rustic and elegant.”
A Golden Hour Photo Session to Remember
One of the couple’s favorite moments of the day was sneaking away after dinner for golden hour photos. As the sun set over the farm, they walked around the pond, took in the moment, and shared a few quiet laughs together.
“Allison had me (Erica) run and jump into the air while Larry caught me,” she recalls. “We didn’t realize a group of guests had gathered on the patio, cheering us on and taking videos. When Larry caught me, my veil got completely tangled around us, which made for some hilarious (but stunning) photos!”
A Color Palette Inspired by a Custom Suit
For their scenic farm wedding, Erica and Larry wanted a color scheme that felt natural and timeless. They chose sage green and gold with pops of pink, but the real inspiration came when Larry decided he wanted to stand out in a green suit instead of traditional black, gray, or navy.
“We planned the bridesmaid dresses around his suit, and it was so much fun leaning into the color theme,” Erica says. “Our day-of coordinator, Sarah, had an amazing artistic vision and helped tie everything together beautifully.”
Food, Music & Ice Cream—A Celebration Built for Fun
Rather than a formal, traditional wedding, Erica and Larry focused on creating a fun and relaxed experience for their guests.
- Music & Dancing: The dance floor was packed all night, and guests could also relax outside on the patio or by the s’mores pit.
- A Maine-Inspired Menu: They fell in love with Blue Elephant Catering after their tasting and added lobster rolls to the menu—despite neither of them being big lobster fans before!
- A Sweet Surprise: Instead of a wedding cake, they opted for an ice cream sundae bar from Garside’s Ice Cream, which added a fun and interactive touch to the night.
“We just wanted everyone to have fun,” Larry shares. “Whether it was dancing, enjoying a s’more, or making an ice cream sundae, we wanted our guests to feel how much we appreciated them being there.”
Wedding Planning Advice from Erica & Larry
- Make sure your wedding reflects both of you. “We have very different personalities, so we had to be intentional about choosing vendors and design elements that represented us as a couple.”
- Don’t sweat the small stuff. “We spent so much time choosing napkins, and in the end, no one even noticed. Go with your gut!”
- DIY takes more time than you think! “Erica made all the place cards, signage, and favors, which we loved—but it was way more time-consuming than expected. Only DIY if you enjoy it.”
A Celebration They’ll Never Forget
For Erica and Larry, the best part of their scenic farm wedding was the joy of celebrating with their closest friends and family.
“The wedding itself flew by,” Erica says. “Each hour felt shorter than the last, but we soaked in every moment and had an absolute blast on the dance floor with everyone we love.”
