Katie and Nick’s 1774 Inn wedding was the perfect mix of relaxed charm, meaningful details, and heartfelt celebration. Set along the stunning Maine coast, their day was filled with personal touches, a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere, and unforgettable moments shared with loved ones.
A Surprise Proposal in Portugal
Katie and Nick’s love story took a romantic turn during their 2022 trip to Portugal, planned in celebration of Katie’s birthday.
“We had talked about getting engaged, but there was no set timeline,” Katie recalls. “So when my birthday came and went without a proposal, I was a little disappointed!”
Nick, however, had a perfectly planned surprise.
The next day, while exploring Douro Valley wine country, the couple visited a vineyard overlooking the river. As they walked past the entrance, Nick led Katie to a shaded picnic area under the trees.
“I was confused—and mildly annoyed—until I turned around and saw him down on one knee.”
With tears of joy and overwhelming excitement, Katie said yes. Nick’s decision not to propose on her birthday had made the moment even more unexpected—and unforgettable.
“It was the perfect call!” Katie says with a smile.
Finding the Perfect Venue for Their 1774 Inn Wedding
Katie and Nick’s search for a venue was driven by a deep connection to Maine.
“We both have fond childhood memories of visiting, and now our parents live there,” Katie shares. “We wanted to share our favorite place with the people we love most.”
When they discovered The 1774 Inn, they knew it was the one.
- The coastal beauty and historic charm captured everything they envisioned.
- The inn’s accommodations meant they could host family and friends for the whole weekend.
- From the moment they arrived, it felt like home.
A DIY Approach with Personal Touches
Katie and Nick took a hands-on approach to many aspects of their 1774 Inn wedding, adding a personal touch to every detail.
- They DIY’d their flowers using blooms from Trader Joe’s.
- Their home became a hub of wedding projects, filled with boxes and checklists.
- The effort was time-consuming, but in the end, everything came together beautifully.
“We were thrilled with how it all turned out—and even more thrilled to have our free time back after the wedding!” Katie laughs.
Unforgettable Moments from Their 1774 Inn Wedding
A Leap of Faith—Literally!
One of the most unexpected (and hilarious) moments came when their photographers suggested that friends toss Katie in the air for a photo.
“I was hesitant at first,” she admits. “But when everyone reassured me, I went for it.”
The result? A photo filled with pure joy and excitement, perfectly capturing the floating-on-air feeling of the entire day.
A Perfect Campfire Ending
After sunset, the couple gathered by the Kennebec River for a campfire, surrounded by music, s’mores, and heartfelt conversations.
“It was everything we’d hoped for,” Nick shares. “A chance to relax, take it all in, and truly connect with our loved ones after the busyness of the day.”
The weather could not have been better—one of the nicest weekends all summer.
A Coastal and Casual Wedding Aesthetic
Katie and Nick wanted their 1774 Inn wedding to feel like an elevated backyard BBQ with a coastal twist.
- Their color palette featured dusty blue, navy, sage green, and peach for a bright yet refined look.
- The coastal cocktail dress code encouraged guests to wear breezy, colorful attire perfect for a Maine summer celebration.
- Their focus was on creating a joyful, welcoming atmosphere where guests could relax and celebrate.
Wedding Planning Advice from Katie and Nick
- Start planning early. “Post-COVID, vendors booked up fast. The earlier you secure your date, the better!”
- Stay organized. “Checklists and Google Docs helped us keep everything on track.”
- Remember, wedding planning is hard work. “Communication, flexibility, and teamwork are key—it’s so rewarding to see everything come together!”
As they reflected on their 1774 Inn wedding, Katie and Nick felt grateful, relieved, and completely overjoyed.
“Seeing all our loved ones together in one place, celebrating this big step in our relationship, was incredible. We felt so loved, and it was amazing to finally just enjoy the moment.”
It was a day they’ll never forget—a joyful, laid-back, and deeply personal celebration in their favorite place.
